Porter Square Books

Release Day!

bookmark-2inx8in-v-front

I’m a big fan of “Fixer Upper” on HGTV. So when I shout out “It’s Release Day!” I’m channeling Chip Gaines’s enthusiasm for “It’s Demo Day!”

Circle of Jinn, the sequel to Becoming Jinn, is out in the world: one year and one month after the release of book one.

As I said in my acknowledgments for the book, becoming an author is a (relatively) new dream of mine. Accomplishing it with Azra, Henry, Nate, and everyone else in the Becoming Jinn series has made that dream not just a reality, but one I’ve enjoyed more than I ever thought I would.

When readers tell me or write to me that they love these characters and these books, it’s sometimes hard for me to believe. That characters who live in my mind, who I’ve spent more than three years with, could mean that much to other people . . . well, it astounds me. And it makes all of this worth it. I am proud of these books and grateful for all the doors they’ve opened for me, especially the new friends I’ve made, readers and authors alike.

This release day post is a thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey. I hope you enjoy reading the conclusion to Becoming Jinn as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Preorder Giveaway Winners!

BecomingJinn
A huge thank you to everyone who participated in my Becoming Jinn Preorder Party!

Preordering is one of the best things you can do for an author, especially a debut like me. Early sales are key for showing a publisher that there is demand for a book and this in turn can help increase support both in bookstores and internally on the marketing side. It even comes into play when authors go to sell their next books to their publishers.

Preorders are so important that I decided to offer two ways to thank readers who snap up Becoming Jinn prior to release.

The first of those offers—one for aspiring writers—concluded on January 31.

And now it’s time to announce the winners!

The winners are:

Ashley Hearn (@AshleyHearn): Full manuscript critique by me

Diana Pinguicha (@pinguicha): First chapter critique by agent Lucy Carson

C.L. McCollum (@C_L_McCollum): Query critique by agent Lucy Carson

Congratulations! And a huge thank you to all the writers who entered my contest and trusted me to read and critique their first pages and queries. It was an honor.

The more preorders I get, the more gift cards I’ll offer! (I may even toss in a $50 one, so spread the word!)

Winners will be chosen at random on April 27 and notified by e-mail.

As a special bonus, and to support my favorite local indie, if you preorder or buy from Porter Square Books by April 25, you’ll earn an EXTRA ENTRY in the raffle. Plus, you can then also get it SIGNED by me!

2015 Is Here! And I’m Throwing a Preorder Party!

Surely you’ve all seen this by now, but what better way to say hello to 2015 than this:

tumblr_nhrqn34Etu1rg2nx6o2_500

tumblr_nhrqn34Etu1rg2nx6o1_500

While 2015 may disappoint in that there are no hoverboards, flying cars, or power shoelaces like Back to the Future predicted, there are thankfully still books. And I’m proud, thrilled, and kinda still in shock to say that THIS YEAR, mine will be one of them.

Becoming Jinn releases on April 21, 2015. It’s been a long time coming; Becoming Jinn sold to Macmillan’s Feiwel & Friends in May 2013.

In some ways, it’s hard to believe we are approaching the three-month countdown. *cue panic attack*

But we are. So to celebrate and thank all of you who have helped, supported, and followed me on this journey, I’m throwing a…

BECOMING JINN PREORDER PARTY!

In case you aren’t aware, preordering is one of the best things you can do for an author, especially a debut like me. Early sales are key for showing a publisher that there is demand for a book and this in turn can help increase support both in bookstores and internally on the marketing side. It even comes into play when authors go to sell their next books to their publishers.

Preorders are SO important that I’m offering a special thank you to the fabulous readers who snap up Becoming Jinn prior to release. And if you’ve already preordered Becoming Jinn, first THANK YOU! And second, I hope you held onto that receipt because you’re gonna need it!

Two Ways to Win

Writer or Reader? Choose Your Preorder Thank You!

I’m running two preorder campaigns*: one that will appeal to writers and one that will appeal to readers (or anyone who loves FREE things).

*one per receipt

Preorder Thank You for Writers: Runs January Only

Are you a writer? Querying? Polishing your final draft? Let me help you! A former copyeditor who has done countless critiques for aspiring writers over the past two years, including during the last two Pitch Wars (which resulted in a book deal for my mentee Laurie Elizabeth Flynn!), I’m addicted to critiquing! The closer I get to publication, the less time I have to offer them, but I’m squeezing in one last round.

If you preorder Becoming Jinn by January 31 from any online or local retailer and e-mail me a copy of the receipt at becomingjinnpreorder@icloud.com, you will automatically receive a free query or first-page critique. Your choice!

Not enough of an incentive? Well, how about this: you will also be entered into a raffle to win a FULL MANUSCRIPT CRITIQUE. For free. Free! (Max: 90,000 words)

What? You want MORE? MORE? Okay, you got it: Two lucky writers will be chosen at random to have their work critiqued by my fabulous, insightful, whip-smart agent, Lucy Carson of The Friedrich Agency. She’s offering one query critique and one first chapter critique. Getting agent feedback like this is a RARE opportunity you don’t want to miss!

All you have to do is preorder Becoming Jinn, but hurry! To quality for the free query or first-page critique and be entered into the raffle to win the full manuscript critique and agent critique, your receipt must be dated no later than January 31, 2015.

Preorder Thank You for Readers: Runs Until April 25

Not a writer, but already a Becoming Jinn fan? Then simply e-mail me a copy of your receipt, dated no later than April 25, 2015, and you’ll be entered into a raffle to win one of several gift cards to places like Starbucks, iTunes, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and more in amounts ranging from $5-$25. The more preorders I get, the more gift cards I’ll offer! (I may even toss in a $50 one, so spread the word!)

To qualify for the gift card raffle, preorder or buy Becoming Jinn by April 25, 2015, from any online or local retailer and e-mail me a copy of the receipt at becomingjinncontest@icloud.com.

To order a signed/personalized copy from Porter Square Books, after you add Becoming Jinn to your cart, just enter “signed copy” and the name to make it out to in the comments field on Porter Square’s online ordering form. Then send me a copy of the receipt and you’ll earn two entries in the gift card raffle.

Here’s to a great 2015!

Pulling Back the Curtain on Becoming Jinn!

I have lots of news!

Becoming Jinn has shiny new BACK COVER COPY, a RELEASE date, is now available for PREORDER, and … has a face!

First up, back cover copy! Click here to read the official description.

Next, May 12, 2015, is the date! That’s when hard cover copies will hit bookstore shelves and be available for online delivery as an ebook. But you can preorder Becoming Jinn now and have it delivered to your doorstep on or around May 12!

Preordering is really important, which I didn’t know until recently. It can make or break a lot for an author, including the print run for the book, the amount of marketing support the publisher allocates toward the book, and the author’s potential for a future (*fingers crossed*) book deal. It even gets the book on the radar of booksellers, encouraging them to recommend the title to shoppers who enter the store. More on the importance of preorders from my good friend and author of AT YOUR SERVICE, Jen Malone, here.

So if you are thinking of buying Becoming Jinn, I would *love* for you to preorder it! I’ve included links to the major retailers here, but feel free to drop by your local store and ask to preorder it. They should be able to look it up in their database and place your order in a snap!

Preorder BECOMING JINN here:

IndieBound ∞ Barnes and Noble ∞ Amazon ∞ Books a Million

Preorder a signed copy of BECOMING JINN here:

As an added preorder bonus, if you’d like a signed copy, I’ve partnered with my local bookstore to get one (or two or ten) to you! And there should also be some swag (think bookmark!) included in all signed preorders.

Signed/personalized copies are available for preorder from Porter Square Books. Just enter “signed copy” and the name to make it out to in the comments field on Porter Square Books’s online ordering form. Signed preorder copies arrive as close to the on sale date as possible.

If you happen to live in the Boston/New England area, I’ll be having a launch party to celebrate the release around the May 12 date, and I’d love to sign your copy in person. Stay tuned (sign up for my e-mail newsletter on the right side of this page) for more details!

Okay, now what you’ve all been waiting for….the cover!

Judge away as you look at this beautiful cover for my debut novel, Becoming Jinn!
