GET SUBMISSION READY WORKSHOP AT GRUB STREET

Friday, September 30, 2016
10-5 pm
Where: Grub Street, Boston, MA

Advance registration required.

Got a finished novel? Ready to sign that killer book deal? First, you need an agent. Agents are the gatekeepers to traditional publishers, and today, they receive hundreds of inquiries a week. To stand out among this fierce competition, three things are vital: an enticing query, a concise synopsis, and a whopper of a first page. In this class, you’ll learn the structure and key elements of these three pieces of the query submission package. We’ll dissect successful examples of all three and discuss how you can apply these techniques to your own queries, synopses, and first pages. Come to class with a draft of a query, synopsis, and first page of your current work in progress. In class, you will rework these pieces, then the instructor will give feedback on all three essential query elements. You’ll leave with the knowledge and tools you need to revise and hone your query submission package, ready to begin your agent search. At the end of class, the instructor will answer your questions about the process of searching for an agent and negotiating the publishing industry in general.

OCTOBER 3, 2016

ONLINE SUBMISSIONS READY WORKSHOP WITH WRITER’S ATELIER

October 3-October 30, 2016

Can’t make my in-person class in Boston? Sign up for it online!

Advance registration required. Discounts available for signups before September 1!

Got a finished novel? Great! Ready to sign that killer book deal? Fantastic! But hold onto your pen, because first, you need an agent. Agents are the gatekeepers to traditional publishers, and today, agents receive literally hundreds of inquiries a week. To stand out among this fierce competition, three things are vital: an enticing query, a concise synopsis, and a whopper of a first page. In this course, writers will learn the structure and key elements of each of these three pieces of the query submission package. Examples of successful queries, synopses, and first pages will be dissected. Plus, each week, writers will have their work reviewed by the instructor. But the real value in receiving a critique is in understanding if you’ve nailed that revision or not. With that in mind, writers will be invited to submit their revised pieces to the instructor for an additional pass. Each component—the query, synopsis, and first page—will be critiqued by the instructor twice. The end result: a perfect query submission package. You will become . . . Submission Ready! Full week-by-week outline available on Writer’s Atelier.

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR WRITING TIME, A WRITER’S LOFT WORKSHOP

Saturday, October 22, 2016

Spaces limited!

Thinking of trying your hand at the official NaNoWriMo in November? Challenging yourself by setting your own deadline for finishing that novel lurking in your drawer? Crunched for time and ready to make the most of your precious writing minutes? Then this session is for you.

In this workshop, I will share the techniques I use to write first drafts that function more like second or third drafts in half the time. Using these tips and tricks, I cut my writing time down from three years to three months, and I’ll show how you can do the same. With advice for managing both your writing life and your personal life, I will give you the tools you need for more efficient writing not just for NaNoWriMo, but for every month of the year.

Loft Members: $30
Non-Members: $45
